NYSC Camp is one of those rites of passage almost every Nigerian graduate has to go through, whether you feel ready or not. It's a rollercoaster of drills and duties mixed with drama.
The Camp is a strange mix of minimal sleep and maximum stress with moments that are low-key unforgettable. It can feel like organized chaos, but with the right mindset and a few hacks, you can actually turn this wild ride into something manageable or even fun.
Here are 10 Realistic ways to survive NYSC Camp
1.) Become Besties With 4:30am
The 4:30am trumpet isn't for the weak, it will yank you out of sleep whether you are ready or not. It’s a signal to start parade prep and the soldiers expect you out on that field fast, no excuses, otherwise be ready for frog jumps or public punishment that will humble you.
Tip: Try waking up early a few days before camp to get your body used to it. Also keep your essentials close to you so you can freshen up as fast as possible and move.
2.) Essentials. Bring Everything And More
Pack like your comfort depends on it because it does. Bring as many all-white outfits as you can. The waist pouch is a life saver. Your own spoon, padlock, power bank, bedsheet, bucket, everything. Make a checklist of everything you would need and tick them off. Don't assume you'll buy it at camp.. you might get disappointed or stranded.
3.)Make Peace With the Sun
NYSC Camp sun isn't your regular Lagos or Abuja’s sun, it's hotter, angrier and very present. Sunscreen is your friend, but even that can only do so much. You'll be outside a lot so prepare for sun burns and a lot of sweating. Stay hydrated, bring a water bottle everywhere and refill as often as you can. Your skin and kidneys will thank you.
4.) Make Peace With the Food
Camp meals are a gamble, you'll never know what to expect. One day you might get a decent jollof rice and the next day, it's a bowl of confusion disguised as food. The dining hall experience is not for the weak. Manage what you can, Skip what you can't. This is where your personal stash becomes your survival kit. Pack cereal, biscuits, Milo, garri, anything that gives you joy and doesn't require so much to prepare.
5.) SAED can actually be fun
The SAED program isn't just a filler, it can be worth your time if you make the most of it. Choose something you are genuinely interested in, whether it is makeup, photography, baking or even sewing. Don't just sit there and count the minutes, participate. You never know what skill might come in handy after camp.
6.) Your circle is a large part of your camp experience
You don't need 20 friends to enjoy camp, just a few real ones who get you. Find your people, someone to gist with during long breaks, hold your place in the food line, even smuggle you food when you are too tired. Camp wahala is better when you have good company and who knows, you may even develop good friendships from there.
7.) Know when to participate
Not everything is by force, not all of them are worth your energy.. learn to pick your battles. There's wisdom in choosing rest than running under the sun to clap for clapping sake. Master the act of quiet escape, smart excuses and knowing when to show up or sit out. Protect your peace, it's a long three weeks.
8.) Prioritize your wellness
Camp isn't the best place to fall sick, prevention is the best. Bring your own meds ( painkillers, antimalarial, allergies, etc) Stay hydrated and take your vitamins. Try not to skip meals, be cautious with public toilets and stay clean. The goal is to finish strong.
9.) Respect Yourself and Avoid Wahala
Not everything requires a clap back, especially not in camp. The rules might seem extra but arguing with soldiers is not what you want to do. Greet them, follow instructions and avoid unnecessary trouble. Camp is just three weeks. You can behave yourself.
10.) Enjoy it while it lasts
Camp will test you, it gives you core memories. Take pictures, laugh with strangers, make new friends, even the ones that annoy you will become gist later.
Bonus Tip: Befriend your platoon leader
It's not just about the vibes, it's about strategy.
Your platoon leader holds plenty of power and bringing them on your side can save you from stress you didn't plan for.
From securing your name on attendance list to helping you drama.
Be friendly, show up and act early. Trust me, you'll thank yourself later.
